Sam's Success at Sheffield Tiger's
Sam's signing for the Sheffield Tiger's for 2008, has shown to be a very good move for both club and rider.
Sam has shown consistency and has provided good solid support, to his fellow racers so far in this year's schedule.
Riding at the harder level in the team's line-up, Sam has a big job ahead to make his mark and show the consistency needed every week. So far though, Sam has shown that his dedication and maturity for a young rider is there.
Working with team manager, Eric Boocock, will only enhance Sam's knowledge for the sport and he will mold Sam to utilize his craft to it's fullest. Sam is lucky to have a manager of Eric's stature and knowledge. This will only enhance his career further with much confidence.
Sam Signs for Berwick Bandits
Bandits boss names rider number 12 of the season
The
Andersons Quality Butchers Bandits of Berwick go into the Premier
League match against Newcastle Diamonds tonight (Saturday at 7) with
their second team change now fully ensconced in the side
Coming
into the Bandit’s line-up this weekend at reserve, following on the
heels of 27-year-old Polish rider Sebastian Trumiński’s arrival is
18-year-old from Adelaide, Australia, Sam Martin.
Martin
comes in as a replacement for Benji Compton who is thought to be
getting fixed up at another track in the near future.
He
is a youngster who’s shown great promise in his short career, winning
the Australian U-16 pairs championship with Jason Norman in 2004 and
was the Division 3 champion in 2005. His UK career began on May 14th
2004 for Oxford Academy vs. Swindon in the Conference League scoring
5+2 from 5 rides.
He
remained with Oxford until 2006 when he went to the Boston Barracuda
Braves before returning to Oxford for the start of this season, but now
is looking to his first bash at the Premier League with the Bandits,
and it all starts tonight at 7.
“Sam
will make good progress with the Bandits and it really keen to score
some serious points for us.” Said Bandits Promoter Peter Waite, “The
lad is a highly capable racer and is on the point of really making his
mark in British speedway and I’m delighted his next step is going to be
with us.”
Sam Gets Rider of the Night against Buxton
But the most exciting rider of the night award went to Sam Martin, who
became the first recipient of the Linda De Boise Trophy for his
never-say-die attitude in coming from the back three times to overhaul
the Hitmen's No 1 Jonathan Bethell.
Taken from the Oxford Mail
The start of a new era for Oxford Speedway, and this first meeting back
- under new promoter Allen Trump - could scarcely have gone better for
the Cheetahs.
Unlike the previous week, the weather was kind, and indeed the heavy
overnight rain from the previous night meant that track conditions were
nigh-on perfect.
The Cheetahs soon exerted their control on proceedings. New No. 1 Lee
Smethills won the opening race, with fellow new signing Danny Betson in
third place.
Brendan Johnston, only recently 15, won Heat 2, and with Dan Blake in third, it was another 4-2 to Oxford.
The powerful middle pairing of Andrew Bargh and Jordan Frampton took
5-1s from Heats 3 & 5, with a fine win for Sam Martin - passing
Jonathon Bethell from behind - sandwiched in between in Heat 4.
After Betson passed Scott James to join Smethills for a 5-1 in Heat 6, the Cheetahs extended their lead to 18 points.
James became Buxton's only heat-winner of the entire meeting in Heat 7,
heading home Johnson & Martin. But the Cheetahs responded with
three maximum heat wins, with the Hitmen failing to gain any extra
points from James's tactical ride in Heat 10.
Heat 11 saw Martin swoop around Bethell after two laps, and Johnson only just failed to overhaul Bethell on the finishing line.
The Cheetahs continued to bang in the points in the final four races -
bagging a further two 4-2s and two 5-1s. Martin completed a hat-trick
of overtakes on Bethell in Heat 13, while Buxton's Ben Taylor showed
some fighting spirit by relieving Johnson of second place in Heat 14.
Smethills completed a faultless 15-point maximum by winning Heat 15.
Frampton and Bargh also scored paid maximums, while Martin scored paid
11 and picked up the Rider Of The Night award for his battling displays.
A collection for wheelchair bound Garry Stead raised £342.
In the second half, Kyle Hughes - still very much part of the Oxford
squad - set the second fastest time of the evening, completing four
laps in 62.24 seconds.

1: David Mason & Irwin are first from the tapes, but both Martin
(in) and Bargh (out) get past Irwin in the opening half-lap. Race
settles down as a 3-3, with Irwin pulling up on the final bend.
D. Mason (W), Bargh (O), Martin (O), Irwin (W) (ret), 55.2 (3-3).
HEAT
2: Piper gates from Blackbird, Day and Hopwood, but a lovely run around
the outside by Blackbird on the opening bends takes him into the lead.
Blackbird is riding a little too wide and both Wildcats have come
inside him by 2L1B. Blackbird takes a tumble on 2L2B, just as team-mate
Hopwood is coming through into third. Blackbird remounts, while Hopwood
closes in on second-placed Piper. Hopwood under Piper with a lap to go,
with Piper comes crashing down on 4L1B. Race stopped, with Piper
excluded, race awarded as a 3-3.
Day (W), Hopwood (O), Blackbird (O) (fell, remounted), Piper (W) (fell, excluded), awarded - no time (6-6).
HEAT 3: MacDonald wins a processional race.
MacDonald (O), Smart (W), Hurst (W), Hughes (O), 54.8 (9-9).
HEAT
4: Day gates ahead of Hopwood, Karl Mason then draws level with
Hopwood, and the two are battling it out side-by-side until Mason (on
the outside) draws ahead on 2LBS. In the meantime, fourth-placed Hughes
pulls up after a lap. The deadlock between the two sides is broken.
Day (W), K. Mason (W), Hopwood (O), Hughes (O) (ret), 56.2 (14-10).
HEAT 5: Bargh gets a good run to the first turn from the outside gate, as the Lions hit back with a 4-2.
Bargh (O), Smart (W), Martin (O), Hurst (W), 54.5 (16-14).
HEAT
6: While David Mason is winning the race, there's excellent stuff from
both the Oxford boys. Blackbird produces another good start (this time
from gate 3), then Martin settles into third place and blocks the
challenge of Irwin. Irwin closes right in at one point, but Martin (on
the inside line) stands firm, while Blackbird concentrates on not
making any mistakes. The team-riding Lions duo cross the line in second
and third - well done lads!
D. Mason (W), Blackbird (O), Martin (O), Irwin (W), 55.8 (19-17).
HEAT
7: MacDonald gates, but Hughes is pushed wide in a tough first bend.
Third-placed Piper suffers an engine failure after a lap and Hughes
comes through for a point, as Oxford level the scores.
MacDonald (O), K. Mason (W), Hughes (O), Piper (W) (ret), 55.1 (21-21).
HEAT
8: Before the race, Hopwood's bike dies at the tapes and he only just
gets it going again in time. Day loses control as he leaves the start,
cannons into team-mate Irwin, who is pushed wide into Martin's path,
who falls on the first turn. Race stopped, all 4 are allowed back,
which is a bit generous on Day. Martin given a little extra time to
brush himself down. In re-run, Day leads from Hopwood and Irwin. But
second-placed Hopwood runs very wide on 4L2B, almost falls, and Irwin
moves inside him on 4LBS to snatch second place.
(Re-run) Day (W), Irwin (W), Hopwood (O), Martin (O), 55.7 (26-22).
HEAT
9: Hurst gates, then Smart inside Bargh on 2L2B to take second place.
Bargh cuts back and nearly back under Smart on the following bend. The
leading three riders are then in close contention but the Wildcats hold
on, for another 5-1.
Hurst (W), Smart (W), Bargh (O), Blackbird (O), 56.2 (31-23).
HEAT
10: Good gates from Irwin & David Mason, and MacDonald unable to
overhaul them. Fourth-placed Hughes falls and remounts on 4L2B.
Irwin (W), D. Mason (W), MacDonald (O), Hughes (O) (fell, remounted), 55.4 (36-24).
HEAT
11: Bargh wears a black-and-white colour kindly loaned by Weymouth
captain David Mason! Bargh beats Karl Mason from the tapes, and Martin
is close to getting around Mason on the opening lap. Mason sees him
off, and Martin then has to resist some pressure from Day. A 7-2 to the
Lions.
Bargh (O) (tactical ride), K. Mason (W), Martin (O), Day (W), 55.1 (38-31).
HEAT
12: Hopwood again has bike problems before the start, and this time
can't get the machine going again. The time runs out, and he is
excluded and replaced by Blackbird. Smart gates, and puts a stop to
MacDonald's outside run on 1LBS. Blackbird is catching third-placed
Piper, when his saddle breaks on 3L2B, dumping him onto the track. Race
stopped and awarded as a 4-2 to the Wildcats.
Smart (W), MacDonald (O), Piper (W), Blackbird (O) (fell, excluded), Hopwood (excluded, two minutes), awarded - no time (42-33).

the match, while the Lions have clinched the bonus point.
D. Mason (W), Bargh (O), K. Mason (W), MacDonald (O), 55.6 (46-35).
HEAT
14: Hurst gates, but slides off on 1L3B and remounts in fourth place.
Hughes inherits the lead, but comes under pressure from Day. Hughes
moves slightly off the line and Day charges under him on the final bend
to snatch the race win.
Day (W), Hughes (O), Blackbird (O), Hurst (W) (fell, remounted), 57.1 (49-38).

! = tactical ride
(Notation: 1L2B = first lap, second bend, 2LBS = second lap, back straight, etc)
HEAT 1: David Mason gates, Irwin around Martin on 1L2B and the Wildcats pair are in front. Both Weymouth riders wide on 1L4B, Martin (who is hugging the inside line) comes through from third to first in fine style. Mason - who almost falls - also loses third to Bargh, in a first-to-last for the Weymouth skipper. Bargh then chasing Irwin for second place, and pushes inside Irwin on 4L1B. Irwin goes wide, team-mate Mason comes through into third place, and Irwin pulls up on the final bend. 1-5 to 5-1 for the Lions.
Martin (O), Bargh (O), D. Mason (W), Irwin (W) (ret), 64.93 (5-1).
HEAT 2: Hopwood leading Day, Piper and Wrathall. Piper falls on 3L4B and crashes into fence, and moments later in a separate incident on the same bend, Wrathall also loses control. Both Wrathall and his machine clear the safety fence and land on the inside of the Greyhound circuit. Race awarded as 3-2. Wrathall taken to hospital, and racing resumes after a 40-minute break.
Hopwood (O), Day (W), Wrathall (O) (fell, excluded), Piper (W) (fell, excluded), awarded - no time (8-3).
HEAT 3: MacDonald & Hughes gate, Smart unable to get on level terms with Hughes. Fourth-placed Hurst pulls up on lap 4.
MacDonald (O), Hughes (O), Smart (W), Hurst (W), 64.75 (13-4).
HEAT 4: Frampton & Hopwood gate, Karl Mason level on outside of Hopwood on 1LBS, but Hopwood (inside) regains the advantage entering 1L3B and Mason doesn't get as close again.
Frampton (O), Hopwood (W), K. Mason (W), Day (W), 64.78 (18-5).
HEAT 5: Easy 5-1 for Hughes & MacDonald, with Hughes setting the fastest time of the night. Third successive 5-1 to the Lions.
Hughes (O), MacDonald (O), D. Mason (W), Irwin (W), 63.38 (23-6).
HEAT 6: Martin wins battle for first place with Karl Mason on lap 1, race then settles down as 4-2 to Lions.
Martin (O), K. Mason (W), Bargh (O), Piper (W), 64.06 (27-8).
HEAT 7: A fine race. Hurst is the early leader, and under pressure from Frampton, when Smart overhauls Frampton with an outside move on 2L3B to join Hurst at the front. Frampton continues to tiger away and, on the final bend, he shoots around Hurst to snatch second place. A blanket could have been thrown over the leading three contenders for most of this race and it was a fine example of Conference League racing.
Smart (W), Frampton (O), Hurst (W), Hopwood (O), 65.54 (29-12).
HEAT 8: Lions gate, then Hopwood resists outside pressure from Irwin on opening lap. Another 5-1 to Lions, Martin celebrates his third race win with a donut.
Martin (O), Hopwood (O), Irwin (W), Day (W), 64.85 (34-13).
HEAT 9: Oxford pair gate, but Hughes sheds a chain on the opening bends, allowing the Wildcats to snatch a 3-3.
MacDonald (O), K. Mason (W), Piper (W), Hughes (O) (ret), 65.78 (37-16).
HEAT 10: Wildcats team manager Jem Dicken nominates Smart as a tactical ride. Smart gates ahead of Bargh, Hurst and Martin, and at this point, Wildcats have a 7-2. But Bargh is on the outside of Smart, and the two are more-or-less side-by-side for half a lap, before Bargh takes the advantage as the first lap is completed. Great stuff from Bargh to fly around Smart. Further good news for Oxford fans, when Martin rounds Hurst with a lap to go. Race ends as a 4-4.
Bargh (O), Smart (W) (tactical ride), Martin (O), Hurst (W), 64.38 (41-20).
HEAT 11: Irwin leads, but comes under increasingly pressure from Frampton. On 3L1B, Frampton dives inside Irwin, the two riders get VERY close on the racetrack, and Frampton takes the advantage out of 3L2B. Yet more breathtaking stuff. Meanwhile, Hopwood closes in on David Mason, but straightens up on 4L1B and loses ground.
Frampton (O), Irwin (W), D. Mason (W), Hopwood (O), 65.38 (44-23).
HEAT 12: All from gate, with MacDonald resisting some pressure from Smart on lap 1.
MacDonald (O), Smart (W), Day (W), Hopwood (O), 64.75 (47-26).
HEAT 13: Frampton gates ahead of David Mason, while Bargh (in third) goes for another blast around the outside. Bargh gets level with David Mason after a lap, but then straightens up entering 2L1B, and ends up falling and remounting in fourth place. Bargh pulls up on lap 3.
13: Frampton (O), D. Mason (W), K. Mason (W), Bargh (O) (fell, remounted, ret), 64.90 (50-29).
HEAT 14: Hurst is first away, but Hughes flies around him after a lap to take the lead. Day (in fourth place) falls on 3L4B, and does well to get up in time to allow race to continue. Race-winner Hughes picks up and falls after race has been completed.
Hughes (O), Hurst (W), Hopwood (O), Day (W) (fell), 64.72 (54-31).
HEAT 15: David Mason gates, and leads from Frampton. Meanwhile, Smart makes a hash of 2L4B, goes wide and loses third to Bargh. Frampton closes right in on Mason on final lap, and Mason only just holds onto his first race win of the night.
15: D. Mason (W), Frampton (O), Bargh (O), Smart (W), 65.11 (57-34).
BERT HARKINS BRONZE HELMET: MacDonald has problems with his bike before the start, and it only just fires up in time. Nevertheless, MacDonald gates, but he then goes wide on 2L2B, and Smart gets inside him on 2LBS. MacDonald trying to sweep back around Smart, but falls on 3L4B, leaving Smart to finish the race unopposed.
Smart (W) beat MacDonald (O) (fell), 65.41.

Southern Junior League Sittingbourne v Oxford 17/9/06
The Oxford Gresham Academy stormed to the top of the Southern Area Junior League table, after not dropping a single point on their way to a maximum 30-6 victory at the Old Gun Site.
With Andrew Bargh without a working bike, the Academy were reduced to just three riders, but Lee Smart, Sam Martin and James Purchase shared Bargh's rides between them and all were untroubled by the gallant but outclassed Sittingbourne side.
HEAT 1 saw Sam Martin & James Purchase take a 5-1 over Lee Lingham, with Carl Martin's race cut short by an engine failure on the second bend (1-5).
Christina Turnbull, the leading female referee in the business had a largely exemplary afternoon, handling a 28-race programme, but she had a temporary blip when putting the riders for HEAT 2 immediately on two minutes, despite the fact James Purchase had also been in the previous heat! She soon cancelled the two minutes to give Purchase a little extra time, and the race resulted in a comfortable 5-1 for Lee Smart & Purchase over Rikki Mullins & Chris Glanville, with Smart winning in 60.2 seconds, a time 2.2 seconds outside Paul Hurry's track record.
Purchase & Martin took Oxford's third successive 5-1 in HEAT 3, despite one interesting moment when Purchase locked up, resulting in the Academy lads getting a little too close for comfort. Meanwhile, third-placed Lingham took a tumble on lap 2, and Mullins came through to take third (3-15).
Smart & Martin took a very comfortable maximum from HEAT 4, with Smart chipping a further 0.1 seconds off Heat 2 time in the fastest time of the whole afternoon (4-20). Purchase made a poor gate in HEAT 5, but still beat Lingham & Glanville to the first turn, to follow home team-mate Smart (5-25).
HEAT 6 saw Smart & Martin again untroubled on their way to a 5-1, as the Academy emulated Rye House's feat at Eastbourne of recording a win by the maximum margin. Strangely, the two maximum scores in this league have been achieved away from home! (6-30).
In a packed afternoon of Speedway, Oxford's SAJL championship challengers, Rye House, also took on Sittingbourne, emerging as 23-13 victors in an incident-packed match, in which the Sittingbourne pair of Lee Lingham (hand) and Carl Martin (unsure of injury sustained) were unfortunately hurt.
And Bryn Williams also team managed "Strong's Stallions" to a 50-46 win over "Golding's Knights", in a match consisting of riders who are members of the Sittingbourne Speedway Club, with a mixture of young and not-so-young riders. James Purchase took two rides in this meeting as a replacement rider, lapping 70-year-old Norman Hornblow on his way to winning his first race (you meanie James!), before suffering an engine failure while leading his second outing.
All-in-all, a pleasant afternoon of grass roots Speedway, with 12-year-old Mark Owen catching the eye on a 250cc bike in his demonstration races.

Southern Junior League Eastbourne v Oxford 9/9/06
The Oxford Gresham Academy maintained their 100% record, after coming through their toughest test yet in an incident packed-match at Arlington.
With Lee Smart and Andrew Bargh both riding in the Conference League Riders' Championship at Rye House (where Smart finished third), Oxford team manager Bryn Williams gave another opportunity to Oli Gay, and also gave Lewis Blackbird, the son of former rider Carl Blackbird, his first competitive outing in British Speedway.
HEAT 1 saw both Oli Gay and Niall Strudwick fall independently on the second bend. In a sensible decision, referee Dave Robinson (former mechanic of 1995 Cheetah David Steen) allowed all four riders in the re-run. Sam Martin, leading at the time of the stoppage, was again first away in the re-run and headed home James Walker, while Gay (in third) again took a tumble on the second bend, allowing Strudwick into third place. Gay remounted to finish the race (3-3).
In HEAT 2, James Purchase gated ahead of Sam Heath, then Lewis Blackbird tried to go around Heath on the second bend, but misjudged the move and ended in the air fence. The race was stopped, with Blackbird excluded. Purchase was untroubled in the re-run, while Nick Laurence and Heath took second and third respectively for the Eaglets (6-6).
HEAT 3 was highly eventful to say the least. Blackbird led from Walker, Gay and Laurence from the tapes, with Laurence then going wide and falling halfway around the opening bends. The race was stopped with Laurence gaining an exclusion. In the re-run, Walker gated, but behind him Gay fell on the second bend and was unable to get his bike going again, then Blackbird fell and remounted on the fourth bend. Blackbird got into trouble again on the second bend of lap 3, again falling, and with Walker approaching, the referee stopped the race and awarded the race as a 3-0 to Eastbourne (9-6).
Purchase & Martin took an untroubled 5-1 from HEAT 4, as the Gresham Academy edged in front for the first time on the evening (10-11).
Gay had damaged his bike in his Heat 3 fall and was forced to withdraw from the meeting. Sam Martin came into HEAT 5 in his place. Purchase was first away, while Martin flew around Walker on the opening bends to join his team-mate at the front. Walker then lifted coming out of the second bend of lap 2 and took a real pearler into the fence. Fortunately, Walker was OK, while the race was awarded as a 5-1 to Oxford (11-16).
Martin & Blackbird gated in HEAT 6, but Blackbird lost control and did a 360 degree turn on the second turn, before falling. He was excluded from the re-run, which Martin won with ease as the Academy ran out as 5-point winners (14-19).
So, a match full of incident, although, fortunately no-one was hurt. Sam Martin & James Purchase both showed their class with untroubled maximums, while both Oli Gay & the fast-starting Lewis Blackbird put in plenty of effort and both will have gained from the experience of riding the testing Arlington circuit.

Southern Junior League Poole v Oxford 6/9/06 & Oxford v Poole 7/9/06
HEAT 1 saw Shane Waldron win from the Academy pair of Sam Martin & James Purchase, with Bob Charles bringing up the rear in a shared opening race (3-3).
Lee Smart (gate 1) & Matt Bates (gate 2) were very close to each other on the starting grid in HEAT 2, with Smart & Bargh going on to take a untroubled 5-1 for the Academy. Meanwhile, fourth-placed Rob Smith failed to complete the final lap (4-8).
Purchase gated in HEAT 3, to lead from Waldron & Bargh. Bargh flew around the outside on the second bend of lap 2, to move from third to first, and the Academy held first and second. However, Purchase came under increasing pressure from Waldron, and Waldron edged inside Purchase on the back straight of the final lap. Purchase, looking to hit back, misjudged his entry to the third bend, and went wide and slid off, allowing Bates to inherit third place (7-11).
Smart led all the way in HEAT 4, with Martin flying around Smith on the back straight to join Smart for a 5-1, as the Academy homed in on another victory (8-16).
Waldron was the early leader in HEAT 5, but Smart charged around him in no uncertain style on the fourth bend and went on to win with some ease. Purchase pulled up from fourth place on the final lap, but the 3-3 clinched the match for the visitors (11-19).
Bates gated in HEAT 6, but Bargh moved around him on the second bend and pulled away to his complete his paid maximum. Sam Martin, having missed the gate, then did his stuff, moving inside Charles on the second bend of lap 2 to move into third, then powering around Bates down the back straight of lap 3 to take a paid win and finish his night with a paid 8 tally (12-24).
So, another no nonsense win for the Academy, at the start of a busy run of fixtures for the team. Lee Smart, not far off the pace in the preceding Elite League match, was in a class of his own in the second half, with Andrew Bargh & Sam Martin also putting in good performances, while the unlucky James Purchase had one of those nights where it all went wrong.

OXFORD GRESHAM ACADEMY 24 POOLE 12 (Southern Area Junior League)
Oxford win aggregate point by 48-24
REPORT BY: Rob Peasley
WEATHER: Fine.
TRACK CONDITIONS: Good.
REFEREE: Margaret Vardy.
The Gresham Academy completed a quick-fire double over league leaders Poole, to move within five points of the Junior Pirates at the top of the Southern Area Junior League table.
Shane Waldron & Rob Smith beat Sam Martin & Oliver Gay from the tapes in HEAT 1. Martin moved inside Smith on the fourth bend to take second, then Smith got into trouble on the final bend of lap 3, but Gay was unable to take advantage, as Poole started the night with a heat advantage (2-4).
In HEAT 2, Lee Smart & James Purchase took a 5-1 from Marc Andrews & Bob Charles (7-5). Smith, suffering from machinery problems, withdrew from the meeting, and Poole tracked just one rider in HEAT 3. Charles led from the tapes, but within half a lap, both Smart and Martin had flown around him, as the Academy took another maximum heat advantage (12-6).
Purchase won a shared HEAT 4 from Waldron & Andrews, with Gay in fourth place. It proved Andrews's final race of the evening, as he too had problems with the machinery, and Poole were reduced to just two riders for the final two races (15-9).
Martin & Purchase took an easy 5-1 over Charles in HEAT 5, as the Academy secured all three league points (20-10).
Waldron gated in HEAT 6, but Smart flew past him on the second bend and then pulled away, while Gay resisted pressure from Charles on his way to third place (24-12).
So, Lee Smart made it four maximums out of four for the Academy, while James Purchase bounced back from the previous night's disappointment, with a well-deserved paid maximum. Sam Martin produced good entertainment (as always!), while Oliver Gay put in plenty of effort and well deserved his point from the final race.
And, perhaps uniquely, Bryn Williams was the team manager of both teams. With Mike Golding forced to miss the meeting in order to catch a flight, Williams took over the reins for the Poole Juniors in addition to his normal job as Academy boss!

A powerful Oxford Academy side took an impressive victory over the Sprockets, who struggled to match the ferocity of their opponent’s top three. Even without the highly-rated Tai Woffinden, the visiting side still managed to conjure a 10-point margin of victory and were superbly led by Lee Smart. The British youngster romped to a 12-point maximum and clearly enjoyed the wide open spaces of the Blunsdon raceway. The flamboyant Nathan Irwin top scored for the Sprockets, but his 5-point haul wasn’t enough to prevent the Oxford Academy grabbing a couple of valuable Southern Area League points.
The contest began ominously for the Sprockets as the opposing duo of James Purchase and Sam Martin combined to register an early 5-1 for the visiting side. After a poor getaway, Irwin chased young Martin hard in pursuit of second spot, but was unable to forge a route past the Aussie. Just three riders came to tapes in heat two as Smart eased to a smooth race win and in so doing, treated the Blunsdon crowd to a fascinating display of leg trailing; an unorthodox, yet fascinating racing style that is all too rare in today’s speedway world.
Purchase and Martin combined for a 4-2 in the ensuing race as Oxford extended their lead, before a further 5-1 in heat four, this time from Smart and Martin, underlined the phenomenal ability of the visiting outfit. Smart took a typically classy victory in heat five, while the Swindon pairing of Irwin and Legg packed into the minor positions to ensure a share of the points. A further 3-3 concluded the night as Smart gained his third successive heat victory, with Hughes and Nicki Glanz coming home second and third respectively.

Southern Junior League.Oxford v Eastbourne 26/7/06
The Oxford Gresham Academy were convincing winners of their opening SAJL fixture of 2006, easily defeating the Eastbourne Eaglets by 26 points to 10.
Sam Martin had bike problems before HEAT 1, but sorted these out and was an easy winner of the race, with Oliver Gay taking second place after holding back Niall Strudwick, while James Walker was left on the starting line with an engine failure (5-1).
Lee Smart & James Purchase led all the way from Nick Laurence & Sam Heath in HEAT 2 (10-2), and Martin & Smart had no problems in taking a further Academy 5-1 in HEAT 3 (15-3).
Purchase gated from Walker & Laurence in HEAT 4, but Gay fell on the second turn and the race had to be stopped, with Gay excluded. Purchase was a convincing winner of the re-run (18-6).
Martin completed a full maximum in HEAT 5, while Purchase lifted on the final bend, but controlled it and finished second, to end his evening on a paid maxmium (23-7).
The final race of the evening saw Heath off to a very slow start, but he inherited third after Gay fell on the second bend. Smart won from Walker, with Smart the third Academy member to finish the night unbeaten. Heath finished third in the race, after bouncing off the air fence on the final corner (26-10).
So, great to see a return of proper second half action at Cowley. Sam Martin, Lee Smart & James Purchase all looked untouchable, and it was nice to see Purchase riding competitively for an Oxford team - having been the Cheetahs mascot between 1998 & 2002.

Taken from the Plymouth web site.
Of the visiting riders Martin was the highlight with 13+3 from seven rides, skipper Oliver – despite mechanical problems – was a steady influence and Mallet, impressive in his opening two rides, deserved more than his six points total. Mallett was probably a touch unfortunate to meet Lee Smart, in majestic form, four times during the race-card.

Press Release from Oxford
TEENAGER SAM GETS THE NOD....
With the Oxford promotion having limited options, not to mention time to find an eligible replacement for Lubos for tonight's match, teenager Sam Martin has been called up to ride at reserve for the Cheetahs.
Explaining the decision Oxford boss Aaron Lanney said, "The rules are such that we can't use our No.8 Mathieu Tresarrieu but only a Premier League rider up to an average of 6.00 or a junior.
With Rye House, Berwick, Workington, Stoke Glasgow and Edinburgh all riding today and the Isle of Wight squad having just completed a three matches in as many days scheduled, most of those limited options options evaporated.
Therefore we've handed Sam, who was a member of Oxford's Conference League winning side last season, and who's doing well for Boston this year, the chance to gain some valuable experience.
"The Kid is so excited it's unbelievable and whilst we don't expect him to score a point being realistic, should he score it will be a real bonus."
